Why You Need Hyaluronic Acid for Healthy & Hydrated Skin!

What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic Acid is a substance that naturally occurs in our body but just like collagen, the amount our bodies naturally make can decrease the older we get. This decrease is caused by the natural aging process as well as other factors like exposure to the sun and pollution. The largest amount of hyaluronic acid found in our bodies is in our skin, which is why this is an ingredient that you will see popping up in a variety of different skincare products. 

What does Hyaluronic Acid do? 
The hyaluronic acid in our skin binds to water, which helps retain moisture and keeps our skin looking hydrated, dewy, and plump. Think of hyaluronic acid like a big drink of water for your skin. Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. That means one single gram of hyaluronic acid has the ability to hold up to six liters of water! That’s some pretty powerful stuff! 

What are the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid? 
When our skin is hydrated, it feels soft, plump, and smooth. Because hyaluronic acid helps our skin retain moisture, it not only can help the skin look smoother and more supple, but it can also help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. In addition, studies have shown that hyaluronic acid has antioxidant properties, so it can act as a shield against free radicals such as pollution. 

Should I be taking a Hyaluronic Acid supplement?

Just like collagen, adding hyaluronic acid back into your body through a supplement can help prevent the decline by giving your body extra amounts to incorporate into the skin. Studies have shown that taking 120–240 mg of hyaluronic per day for at least one month can significantly increase skin moisture and reduce dry skin in adults.
