Have you ever wondered why eating seasonal produce is recommended over out-of-season produce? Well, seasonal produce is purchased and consumed around the time that it is harvested, which is why it is fresher, tastier and more nutritious than food consumed out of season. Oftentimes, out of season produce is harvested early to allow time for it to be shipped and distributed to your local store. This can cause the produce to lack flavor, which is why it is always best to look for in-season items when possible. As an added bonus, studies have shown that fruits and vegetables contain more nutrients when allowed to ripen naturally!
Here are some of our favorite fruits and vegetables that are in season right now, so you can keep an eye out next time you hit the grocery story or farmer’s market:
- Brussels Sprouts
- Collard Greens
- Green Beans
- Sweet Potatoes & Yams
- Winter Squash
